New York: Pakistan has once again emphasized the urgent need for a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine, stressing that the war has no military solution.
Addressing a session of the United Nations Security Council, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Tariq Fatemi said the conflict, now in its fourth year, has severely impacted regional and global peace and security.
“The continuation of this war has resulted in loss of lives, a refugee crisis, food and energy shortages, and rising inflation, causing severe hardships, especially for developing countries,” Fatemi noted.
He stressed that “every bullet, rocket, and drone strike takes us further away from peace.” Fatemi urged all parties to exercise restraint, adhere to international humanitarian law, and take practical steps to de-escalate tensions.
Highlighting the complex historical context of the conflict, he cautioned that blaming third parties only hinders prospects for peace.
Fatemi recalled that the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2774 earlier this year, calling for a ceasefire and dialogue. Pakistan supported the resolution and welcomed direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine as a positive step.
“Pakistan supports peace and believes in the power of dialogue and diplomacy,” he reaffirmed. “Our collective priority must be to silence the guns and create an environment conducive to a negotiated settlement.”
He assured that Pakistan will continue to support all regional and international efforts aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict.
