In South Asia, milk tea is considered more than just a beverage, forming an essential part of daily life and hospitality. However, health experts have warned that excessive consumption of milk tea may have harmful effects on health.

A nutrition expert said that whether tea is beneficial or harmful depends on how it is prepared, the ingredients used, and the type of tea leaves selected.

The expert noted that moderate tea consumption can provide energy and refreshment, but advised that more than three to four cups per day is not recommended.

He cautioned that excessive milk, high sugar content and overly strong tea may contribute to various health problems.

He further explained that high sugar intake in milk tea can increase blood sugar levels, while overly strong tea may cause indigestion, stomach gas and sensitivity issues in some individuals, particularly those with lactose intolerance.

The expert advised opting for healthier alternatives such as black tea, green tea or lighter brews. He added that natural ingredients like ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves and fennel not only enhance flavor but also support digestive health.

He also recommended avoiding tea and other caffeinated beverages three to four hours before sleep, noting that they can disrupt sleep patterns. He specifically advised against the habit of consuming milk tea immediately after dinner.

Warning against smoking alongside tea, the nutrition expert described the combination as particularly harmful, saying it can lead to dehydration and negatively impact overall health.

He added that green tea and matcha can be beneficial when consumed with plain hot water, but their advantages are reduced when milk, cream or excess sugar is added.
