ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered a nationwide ban on the production and use of low quality syringes in an effort to reduce the spread of infectious diseases, including HIV and Hepatitis C.
He issued the directive while chairing a health sector review meeting in Islamabad, where officials discussed ongoing efforts to control infections across the country.
Prime Minister instructed authorities to take strict legal action against manufacturers, hospitals, and individuals involved in using or supplying unsafe syringes. He warned that negligence in this area will not be tolerated.

He also called for the formation of a special committee of health experts to develop a long term national strategy. The committee will consult with provincial governments and submit recommendations for stronger disease control measures.
PM Shehbaz directed the Ministry of Law to prepare necessary changes in laws and regulations. He also asked the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan to work with the medical equipment industry to improve standards and prevent future health risks linked to unsafe medical tools.
Officials briefed the meeting on current steps being taken to limit the spread of infectious diseases. The session was attended by senior ministers, legal officials, public health experts, and representatives from international health partners. The Prime Minister stressed better training for healthcare workers and stronger international cooperation to support disease prevention efforts.
