SAN FRANCISCO: OpenAI experienced a global service outage on July 25, disrupting ChatGPT, the OpenAI API and Codex for users across multiple countries.
The company confirmed the issue on its status page and said engineers were investigating the incident as users reported problems accessing conversations, submitting prompts and using developer tools.
The outage affected users in the United States, Europe, India, Japan and Australia, according to reports shared on outage tracking platforms. Many users said ChatGPT would not load, saved chat history disappeared and prompts failed to generate responses. Developers also reported that applications connected to OpenAI’s API stopped working because the service was unavailable.
OpenAI acknowledged elevated error rates across its core services but did not immediately identify the cause of the disruption. The company also did not provide an estimated time for full service restoration.
The disruption had a significant impact on businesses that rely on OpenAI’s technology. Thousands of companies use the OpenAI API to power customer support tools, business software and AI powered applications, when the API stopped responding, many of those services also experienced interruptions.
Industry experts say outages like this highlight the growing dependence on AI platforms for both consumers and businesses. As more organizations integrate AI into their products, even a short service interruption can affect customers, employees and business operations around the world.
