The Accountability Court (AC) has on Thursday heard the illegal allotment reference of plots against Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman, the owner of Jang and Geo Media Group, which was later adjourned till August 31 due to the unavailability of advocate.

The AC Judge Asad Ali heard the illegal plot allotment reference against Mir Shakil and others in which Special Prosecutors Syed Faisal Raza Bukhari and Haris Qureshi appeared on behalf of NAB while the accused appeared along with his lawyer.

During the hearing, NAB Prosecutor  Syed Faisal Raza Bukhari said that it would take two hours for the prosecution to complete its arguments on which the judge said that the prosecution should proceed and Amjad Pervez Advocate present his arguments tomorrow (Friday).

The judge, however, passed his remarks and said that after hearing the arguments of the prosecution and the accused, I have to look at the record and then decide accordingly.

The judge told the prosecutor that if you had come two days ago, Mir Shakil’s acquittal plea would have been decided as it is a sensitive case and I do not want to take any risk.

He further said that every case is important for the court but the one who gets media hype becomes more sensitive.

“I have been on leave since tomorrow. The case will now be heard after the holidays as the court has to look at the record after arguments,” the judge added.

It should be noted that during the hearing in the court, the NAB prosecutor while presenting his arguments, said that the co-accused Nawaz Sharif has been declared a fugitive for not appearing despite being summoned by the court.

Mir Shakil, former DG LDA Humayun Faiz Rasool, and Bashir Ahmad have been declared guilty in NAB reference.

Accused Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman obtained 54 plots of 1, 1 Kanal on exemption with the connivance of then Chief Minister Nawaz Sharif, NAB prosecutor said.

Earlier, a notice had been issued to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on the acquittal plea of Mir Shakil and DG Land Development Authority (LDA) Humayun Faiz Rasool.

Special Prosecutor Haris Qureshi had appeared before the court on behalf of NAB. The prosecution’s witness, Director Water and Sanitation Agency, Lahore (WASA) Zeeshan Bilal, had been summoned to record his statement.

At the hearing, the NAB prosecutor Haris Qureshi said the governing body has a case of legal violations against Jang-Geo owner and others.

“NAB has a case against Nawaz Sharif, Mir Shakil and others for misuse of power,” he added.

Mir Shakil had violated the policy and allotted land from three different areas in a certain area, the prosecutor said.

“By law, more than 15 kanals are not allowed for an allotment but the accused has illegally occupied 58 kanals of land instead of 56 kanals,” Qureshi remarked.
