Although Al Capone died almost 75 years ago, it’s apparent that interest in the iconic Chicago mobster is still alive, as some of his cherished items were auctioned off for at least $3 million over the weekend.
Capone’s family sold some of his possessions, including what was touted as his favorite pistol, at auction in California, where his three surviving grandchildren live, according to the media.
The event, dubbed “A Century of Notoriety: The Estate of Al Capone,” drew almost 1,000 registered bids, with 150 of them attending the nearly four-hour-long event in person.
A bear-shaped humidor, diamond jewelry, and family pictures were among the things up for sale.
Capone’s favored Colt.45-caliber semi-automatic handgun, which sold for $860,000, proved to be the most desirable item.
The identity of the majority of the buyers was kept hidden.
Kevin Nagle, a Sacramento investor and company owner, is one whose name has been made public.
A beautiful humidor for $120,000 and an 18-karat yellow gold and platinum belt buckle for $22,500 were among the goods previously owned by “Scarface” Capone that he purchased.
Capone’s narrative is well-known, due to a slew of films, television series, and books about the gangster.
Capone was dubbed “Public Enemy No. 1” following the 1929 “Valentine’s Day Massacre,” in which seven members of a rival bootlegger gang were murdered down in a parking garage.
In 1934, he was found guilty of income tax fraud.
He was imprisoned for 11 years on Alcatraz Island, a federal prison in the middle of the San Francisco Bay, and died of a heart attack in the Florida mansion where he and his friends were suspected of plotting the massacre years before.
