Mary Mara, who guest-starred on shows Ray DonovanNash Bridges and ER, died in an apparent drowning accident on Sunday. The St. Lawrence River in New York is where her body was found. She was 61.

“The preliminary investigation suggests the victim drowned while swimming,” the New York State Police said in a press release. There are no signs of foul play, but an investigation is ongoing.

A report for Mara tells: “Mary was one of the finest actresses I ever met. She had a terrific sense of humor and a unique outlook on life. I still remember the first time that I saw her onstage in Mad Forest in ’92. She was utterly captivating, well loved, and will be missed.”

In the early years of her 32-year career, the actor performed off-Broadway. In Love Potion No. 9, which also starred Tate Donovan and Sandra Bullock, she made her screen debut. The same year, Mara portrayed Billy Crystal’s daughter in the movie Mr. Saturday Night. The Broadway adaptation’s lead actor, Crystal, said he will dedicate Tuesday night’s performance to his former co-star.

Mara had numerous television appearances, including those in Law & Order, Dexter, Shameless, Criminal Minds, and Lost. In the 2020 movie Break Even, she last made an appearance on screen. Mara has appeared in almost 80 films.

According to a family spokesperson, the actress was staying at her sister’s vacation house when she passed away. An autopsy will be performed by the Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office to ascertain the precise cause of death.

According to her obituary, Mara is survived by her stepdaughter Katie Mersola, sister Martha Mara, a sister and a brother-in-law named Susan Mara and Scott Dailey, and a nephew named Christopher Dailey.
