Sooraj Barjatya says Chopra and Johar brought in the NRI phase
In a recent interview, Sooraj Barjatya discussed the filmmakers Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra. The director acknowledged that NRI films were formerly prevalent in Bollywood as he prepared for the release of Uunchai, his upcoming movie starring Amitabh Bachchan. He claimed Karan and Aditya ushered it in.
The director responded that the industry goes through “phases” when questioned about whether Indian cinema was returning to its roots. When Maine Pyaar Kiya (1989), starring Salman Khan, was launched, there was, according to him, “a phase of love stories” in Bollywood. The era of “family” movies began with Madhuri Dixit’s Hum Aapke Hain Koun (1994), the filmmaker continued.
“I clearly remember when I made Maine Pyaar Kiya there was a phase of love stories. With Hum Aapke Hain Koun the whole family culture came in. Then Adi and Karan (filmmakers Aditya Chopra and Karan Johar) brought in the NRI phase. What I think is that the audiences are also traveling everywhere. People are able to afford travel. I feel maybe the people also want to show their children their roots. So, now films have also come back to Lucknow, Kanpur, Agra etc.,” Sooraj told a news cannel.
An Aditya Chopra-produced film Among the well-known movies on NRI families that came out in the late 1990s and early 2000s are Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna by Karan Johar. Their movies frequently catered to NRI audiences and were significant box-office successes.
Sooraj also discussed southern films that were “rooted in Indian culture” in the same interview, he said, “It’s a phase, but I think people want to see Indian stories. Indians will be Indians at the end of the day. And I am very happy that Indian stories are being told.”
Sooraj’s latest movie, Uunchai, will be his first in seven years. The play, which stars Amitabh Bachchan, Anupam Kher, Boman Irani, and Danny Denzongpa, is about four buddies. Uunchai also stars Sarika, Neena Gupta, and Parineeti Chopra. On November 11, the movie is expected to be released.
