Leading Premier League team Arsenal announced on Tuesday that it has recruited seasoned Italian midfielder Jorginho from London rival Chelsea to an 18-month deal.

Although the transfer’s financial terms were not made public, British media outlets stated that the sale was worth 12 million pounds ($14.78 million).

“Jorginho is a midfield player with intelligence, deep leadership skills, and a huge amount of Premier League and international experience,” Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta told the club’s website.

“Jorginho has won in his career but he still has the hunger and huge willingness to contribute here. We are so pleased to sign Jorginho and welcome him and his family to the club.”

With Mohamed Elneny out with a knee injury that necessitated surgery and will keep him out for “an extended period of time,” Arsenal, who are five points ahead of Manchester City in the fight for the title, needed reinforcements in the midfield.

Jorginho, who was born in Brazil and has won the Champions League with Chelsea and the 2020 European Championship with Italy, will offer Arsenal substantial experience in their championship defense.

This season, the 31-year-old has played a significant role for Chelsea, appearing 25 times across all competitions.

Jorginho has made more than 200 appearances for Chelsea since joining them in July 2018 from Serie A side Napoli. During that time, he has also won the Europa League, three FA Cups, and two League Cups.

He spent four and a half years at Napoli, where he had a breakout 2017–18 campaign in which he was crucial to their title challenge even though they came in second.

After apparently having two offers for Ecuadorian midfielder Moises Caicedo rejected by Brighton & Hove Albion, Arsenal launched a last-minute proposal for Jorginho.

On Saturday, Arsenal will play its first league match of the season against 19th-placed Everton, who on Monday hired Sean Dyche as a manager in an effort to ensure their top-flight survival.
