King Charles III may become the first monarch in British history to be publicly anointed at his coronation, breaking yet another tradition, according to reports.

In previous coronations, the moment when the Archbishop of Canterbury uses holy oil to anoint the sovereign’s hands, breasts, and head was not seen in public.

During Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation ceremony in 1953, a gold cloth canopy was draped over her head.

For the first time, King Charles III may give the public a glimpse.

It is believed that the Royal School of Needlework has begun work on the new canopy.

The Barons of the Cinque Ports or Knights of the Garter traditionally carry and hold the canopy over the monarch.

According to the Daily Telegraph, a transparent canopy is being built to allow the new King to be anointed in front of his subjects and on camera for the first time.

Many people are hoping that the King will have the scholars of Christ’s Hospital, a boarding school that educates children from less privileged backgrounds, carry the canopy during his ceremony.

The King is said to have approached Justin Welby about a possible deal that would allow the Duke and Duchess to attend despite the recent fallout from Harry’s memoir Spare.

Since Charles’ accession to the throne last year, there has been speculation about whether the couple would attend the Westminster Abbey ceremony in May.

Harry and Meghan stepped down as working royals two years ago, and the former’s book, published earlier this month, revealed a number of damaging revelations about senior members of the Royal Family.
