Will Smith began his speech by emphasizing the significance of the Beacon Awards in bringing forward films with challenging subjects that engage and enlighten the audience. They hoped that Emancipation would highlight Peter’s triumphant story, as well as his deep love for and unwavering faith in his family. Smith stated in his speech that Emancipation was one of the most difficult films he has worked on in his career. The actor stated that shifting a “modern mind to that time period” was extremely difficult. That level of inhumanity was difficult for the actor to imagine.

Antoine Fuqua thanked the crew and cast for their assistance.

Will Smith had previously been absent from the NAACP Image Awards, where he had won the award for best actor for his portrayal of Peter. He later thanked the organisation and crew on Instagram, expressing how much it meant to him to be recognised in this way.

During his appearance at the 2022 Oscars, the actor slapped Chris Rock across the face for making fun of his wife. Smith received the Best Actor Award moments later in the ceremony. Smith’s actions were widely condemned on the internet, and he was later barred from attending the Oscars for ten years.
