The Big Lebowski still serves as a strong unifying force in the room, 25 years later. Monday marks the silver anniversary of the crime-comedy movie made by the Coen brothers, a little more than a week after two of its stars, Jeff Bridges and Sam Elliott, got back together at the 2023 SAG Awards.

The comedy that results from Bridges’ slacker character being mistaken for someone who owes money to crime boss Jackie Treehorn (Ben Gazzara) is followed in The Big Lebowski as he tries to live his life and quietly lament the destruction of his rug.

In the 1998 cult classic by Joel and Ethan Coen, Bridges, 73, played the lead character Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski, while Elliott, 78, played “The Stranger,” the narrator of the film who is seen sitting at the bar of the bowling alley that the Dude frequently visits with his pals.

Tara Reid, John Goodman, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi, John Turturro, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and other actors also appear in the film.

In order to discuss the film’s enduring influence, Bridges, Goodman, and Buscemi made an appearance on the Today show in 2018.

Whether it actually seemed like twenty years had already passed, “It both does and does not. It’s peculiar, “When he said that, Goodman. An entire generation is currently experiencing this for the first time, including college-age students.

The Conners actor had pleasant memories of his interactions with the Cohen brothers and the rest of the cast and crew. Goodman even remembers Bridges photographing the production while it was happening.

“That was fantastic because you had this discourse and felt like you were on top of the world. And the unity among all of them, “added he.

Buscemi remembers not understanding why Bridges and Goodman’s characters were so cruel to Donny, despite the fact that he concurred with Goodman that the writing was amusing.

I thought that was really kind of wild and weird and amusing, I loved it,” he exclaimed. “But, I must admit that I didn’t understand the part of Donny as I was reading it. I felt sorry for the man and was depressed. Why Walter (Goodman) bullies him so much, I wondered. The ashes are then my favorite scene.”

The Big Lebowski, which had a mediocre box office performance when it was first released, is now regarded as a cult masterpiece and has a 93% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Anything from a yearly festival to a New York City shop, a charity fund, and yes, even a religion called “Dudeism” have been inspired by it (or “The Church of the Latter-Day Dude”).

Elliott recently talked about reuniting with Bridges at the SAG Awards in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. Elliott had just won the award for best male performance in a television movie or limited series (1883).

At the Feb. 26 event, which took place in Los Angeles, he stated, “I’m sitting with Jeff at the table and I haven’t seen Jeff in quite a while.

Elliott said of Bridges, who was up for an award for the best male performer in a drama series, “I’m incredibly delighted to be with him” (The Old Man).

The Big Lebowski fans can watch the movie right now on Peacock, White Russian optional.
