Google unveils new generative AI lineup prior to Microsoft’s anticipated GPT-4 release
Google released a slew of new generative AI capabilities and features for developers today, via a PaLM API and in Google Cloud, as well as new connections for Google Workspace users, including Gmail and Google Documents.
The developments come less than a month after Google introduced Bard, their search chatbot, and less than a week after Bloomberg reported that a new internal Google order had been issued. “requires generative AI to be incorporated into all of its biggest products within months.”
The announcement comes ahead of Microsoft’s highly anticipated virtual ‘Future of Work with AI’ presentation this Thursday. According to Microsoft Germany CTO Andreas Braun’s statements last week, that event will involve the release of a multimodal GPT-4 as well as a ChatGPT upgrade for Microsoft 365 products such as Word and Outlook.
During a virtual press conference yesterday, Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian stated that the AI announcements “represent the culmination” of many years of work, including bringing together Transformer technology advances in reinforcement learning and parallelism, as well as orchestrating large training workloads.
The following are the major announcements:
Google launched a new PaLM API, allowing developers to build on Google’s “best” LLM models.
The API will include a tool called MakerSuite, which will allow developers to create prototypes. Google says it will eventually include tools for quick engineering, synthetic data production, and custom-model tuning.
Google revealed today that a private sample is available to select developers and that a queue will be published soon.
Vertex AI is Google Cloud’s end-to-end machine learning platform, which enables data science teams to accelerate ML model development and deployment from feature engineering to model training, low-latency inference, and enterprise-level governance and monitoring.
Developers can now use Google‘s foundation models on Google Cloud to generate text and graphics. Creating audio and video will become choices in the future. Customers of Google Cloud will be able to find models, create and change prompts, fine-tune them with their own data, and deploy apps.
Google Cloud also unveiled a generative AI app builder. “connects conversational AI flows with out-of-the-box search experiences and foundation models.”
Google stated that over 3 billion people are already taking advantage of AI capabilities in Gmail and Google Documents, such as Smart Compose and auto-generated summaries.
The company stated that it has a “restricted set of trusted partners.” “Testers” will put a new set of generative AI features in Gmail and Google Documents to the test, including the ability to change the tone from playful to professional.
Finally, Google also announced what it called the ‘most open and innovative AI ecosystem’ with a series of partnerships, programs, and resources.
Companies such as Cohere and Anthropic, for example, are already employing Google Cloud’s infrastructure and GPU and TPU clusters to train LLMs. Google is now collaborating with AI21 Labs, Midjourney, and Osmo.
Aible, Anyscale, Gretel, Labelbox, Snorkel AI, and Weights & Biases are among the AI solutions that have announced new or expanded agreements with Google Cloud.
In addition, numerous AI application providers, including Bending Spoons, Faraday, Glean, Replit, and Tabnine, were introduced as part of the new Made with Google Cloud AI Initiative. In addition, Accenture, Deloitte, BCG, and McKinsey committed to expanding the Google Cloud AI and generative AI advisory and implementation services and capabilities available to customers.
