The Huawei Mate X3 is official, and it’s impressive on a number of levels.

To begin with, the Mate X3 is far lighter than its competitors. It weighs 239g (the Feathered Sand model weighs 241g), or 24g less than the Galaxy Z Fold4. And Huawei achieves the low weight without making significant sacrifices in other areas: it features larger displays, a larger battery, and a periscope zoom camera. The Mate X3 is only 5.3mm thick when unfurled, which is rather impressive.

The book-style foldable features two 120Hz monitors. The cover screen measures 6.4 inches and has a resolution of 2504 x 1080 pixels with a 20.9:9 aspect ratio. Inside is a 7.85-inch panel with a resolution of 2496×2224 pixels and a near-square 8:7 aspect ratio.

The Huawei Mate X3 is water-resistant to IPX8 standards, as is the Galaxy Z Fold4. This is the first non-Samsung folding phone to be waterproof. On the Mate X3, Huawei also provides two-way satellite connectivity.

The new hinge design tucks the folding display in on itself, allowing the Mate X3 to close flat. There’s also the typical hype about no-creases, but we’ll have to judge for ourselves. Despite its small width, the hinge holds the phone from a variety of angles for those no-tripod selfies. A split-screen option for video conversations and video watching is also available, as is a new nightstand mode that displays the weather and clock.

The Huawei Mate X3 features a triple camera on the back as well as two 8MP selfie cameras, one on each screen.  In addition to the 50MP f/1.8 wide camera, there are 13MP f/2.2 ultrawide and 12MP f/3.4 5x telephoto cameras.

Harmony OS 3.1 is installed on the Mate X3. The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor is used, and it comes with 12GB of RAM. The Mate X3 only supports 4G connectivity because Huawei is prohibited from purchasing 5G modems.

A big 4,800mAh battery is housed inside, featuring 66W wired and 50W wireless charging capabilities.
