Chinese airline announces new routes for 2023

Airline
  • China has resumed allowing some passengers through its borders for the first time.
  • Resuming flying routes that were canceled or significantly curtailed due to the pandemic.
  • A few big new routes are also making it simpler than ever for tourists to go from major cities.

The time has come: China has resumed allowing some passengers through its borders for the first time since the coronavirus outbreak began in early 2020.

Although Chinese nationals living abroad who want to see loved ones will probably make up the first significant wave of visitors to the nation, leisure travel appears set to follow.

The nation has eliminated quarantine regulations and loosened other restrictions on incoming tourists, opening the path for the tourism sector to resume.

The major airlines in China are expanding their offerings at the same time.

That entails, for the most part, resuming flying routes that were canceled or significantly curtailed due to the pandemic.

However, a few big new routes are also making it simpler than ever for tourists to go from major cities like Budapest, Istanbul, Johannesburg, and China to other countries, including the opposite way around.

Shanghai to Athens

China and Greece had intended to strengthen their air ties before the outbreak.

The first direct flight from Shanghai Pudong (PVG) to Athens arrived in the final week of December, restoring one of the most significant connections. The 10.5-hour flight will now be run by Air China just once each week.

Guangzhou to Istanbul

This year, a new China Southern Airlines route will provide a direct connection between Istanbul and the third-largest city in China.

On January 10, the airline, which has its main office in Guangzhou, will launch service to Istanbul Airport (IST).

The flight from Guangzhou to Istanbul takes around 11 hours, while the return trip takes about 9.5 hours.

Turkish Airlines’ base of operations is in IST, which is fantastic news for Chinese passengers looking for another means to reach Europe.

Beijing to Johannesburg

China has been trying to strengthen its relationships in Africa for years, and one way to do that is to make it easier for travelers who want to travel between the two continents.

An upcoming Air China direct flight will travel between Beijing‘s Capital International Airport (PEK) and Johannesburg, South Africa’s O.R. Tambo International Airport (JHB).

Air China announced the new route alongside a series of other big ones — more on that later — but there’s no confirmed start date yet.

Chongqing to Ho Chi Minh City

This season, numerous new, fascinating flight routes are being added to the city of Chongqing in southwest China. The first is a direct Air China flight to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam.

The Reunification Palace, Central Post Office, War Remnants Museum, and other well-known locations in Vietnam’s largest city will be easier for some of Chongqing’s 30 million+ people to visit as a result.

Chongqing to Budapest

The other new route leaving Chongqing is operated by Air China and departs once a week for Budapest’s Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD).

There are already several additional flights between the two nations; one from Shanghai launched in 2019 and a direct flight from Beijing to Budapest began in 2015.

Xi’an to Almaty

Kazakhstan’s capital has a rich historical heritage thanks to Almaty, which has been inhabited since at least 1000 BC and was a Silk Road city.
On January 6, the first China Southern Airlines flight that was a direct connection from Xi’an to Almaty International Airport (ALA) departed.
There’s a fair chance that this flight is the first of many to come. President Xi Jinping’s trip to Kazakhstan last year, which was his first trip outside of China during the Covid era, is evidence of the two countries close diplomatic ties.

Nanning to Phnom Penh

With two flights every week between Phnom Penh and the southern Chinese city of Nanning, China Southern Airlines is establishing tighter connections with neighboring Cambodia.
Since there are currently no airlines flying directly from Nanning to either Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, despite the city’s proximity to China’s border with Vietnam, this expanding connection with Cambodia may also provide additional access to Southeast Asian countries.

Ozone layer is on course to regenerate entirely within decades scientists report

Ozone
  • The ozone layer is on track to recover within decades.
  • International cooperation aided in mitigating the damage.
  • If global policies remain unchanged, the ozone layer is likely to recover to 1980 levels.

According to a new United Nations-backed assessment, the Ozone layer is on track to recover within decades as ozone-depleting chemicals are phased out globally.

The ozone layer shields the Earth from dangerous ultraviolet rays. However, scientists have been warning about a breach in this shield since the late 1980s, caused by ozone-depleting compounds such as chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs, which are often found in refrigerators, aerosols, and solvents.

International cooperation aided in mitigating the damage. According to a panel of experts’ assessment published on Monday, the usage of CFCs has fallen by 99% since the Montreal Protocol entered into force in 1989, which began the phase-out of those and other ozone-harming chemicals.

If global policies remain unchanged, the ozone layer is likely to recover to 1980 levels for the majority of the world by 2040, according to the estimate. The timeline for recovery in polar locations is longer: 2045 in the Arctic and 2066 in the Antarctic.

“Ozone action establishes a precedent for climate action. “Our accomplishment in phasing out ozone-depleting chemicals demonstrates what can and must be done urgently to transition away from fossil fuels, reduce greenhouse emissions, and so limit temperature rise,” said World Meteorological Organization Secretary-General Petteri Taalas.

Zone-depleting gases are also powerful greenhouse gases, and without a prohibition, the globe may have warmed by up to one degree Celsius, according to a 2021 study published in the journal Nature.

Since the industrial revolution, the Earth has warmed by about 1.2 degrees Celsius, and scientists have warned that this should be kept to 1.5 degrees Celsius in order to avoid the worst repercussions of the climate problem.

According to scientists, exceeding 1.5 degrees Celsius would significantly raise the likelihood of major drought, wildfires, floods, and food shortages.

Solar geoengineering

For the first time in this four-year review, scientists considered the possibility of solar geoengineering: the endeavor to limit global warming through techniques such as injecting particles into the stratosphere to bounce sunlight out of the earth’s atmosphere.

They discovered that stratospheric aerosol injection could help limit climate warming, but they cautioned that there could be unforeseen consequences. The deployment of the technology “may also alter stratospheric temperatures, circulation, and ozone formation, destruction, and transport rates,” according to the paper, which is issued every four years.

Bolsonaro tweets photos from hospital in Florida

Bolsonaro
  • Bolsonaro left Brazil for the United States on December 30.
  • He had been hospitalized on Monday due to abdominal “discomfort”.
  • US lawmakers demanded that he leave the US after his supporters attacked Brazil’s seat of government.

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro tweeted a picture of himself on Monday from a hospital bed in Orlando, Florida, as US lawmakers demanded that he leave the US after his supporters attacked Brazil’s seat of government

Bolsonaro said he was seeking care for issues stemming from a long-ago stabbing wound. His wife, Michelle Bolsonaro, earlier claimed in an Instagram post that he had been hospitalized on Monday due to abdominal “discomfort” brought on by wounds sustained in a knife assault at a political rally in 2018.

After hundreds of Bolsonaro’s followers invaded the capital city of Brasilia on Sunday, vandalizing government buildings and receiving harsh criticism from the world community, Bolsonaro was taken to the hospital.

According to Brazilian Justice Minister Flavio Dino, as of Monday, roughly 1,500 people have been detained.

The former leader condemned the attack in a tweet on Sunday, but experts suggest that his persistent and false allegations of election fraud in the months leading up to the election in October worked to inflame his supporters’ resentment.

They had been camped out in the capital for months before the violence on Sunday, and as a result, the security perimeter around the congressional building had been strengthened.

According to sources, Bolsonaro left Brazil for the United States on December 30. This was just two days before his successor, President Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva, took office. He was permitted to go with five government employees to Miami from January 1 through 30.

Although it’s not obvious on what grounds Bolsonaro may be removed from the US, several US senators have demanded his extradition.

  • M/V Glory experienced a technical issue 24 miles (38 km) into its southerly voyage via the Egyptian waterway.
  • The obstruction caused ships to back up and momentarily halted international trade in several items.

A container ship from Ukraine carrying more than 65,000 tonnes of corn has been refloated after being stranded in the Suez Canal.

According to the Suez Canal Authority, the M/V Glory experienced a technical issue 24 miles (38 km) into its southerly voyage via the Egyptian waterway, close to the city of Qantara (SCA).

Regular canal traffic was anticipated to resume at 11 a.m. local time after tugboats transported the broken-down vessel to a repair area, where it was anticipated to only cause minor delays.

According to the Joint Coordination Centre, which is in charge of managing the grain exports, the ship departed Chornomorsk port in southwest Ukraine on Christmas Day with 65,970 metric tonnes of corn bound for China.

According to the center, an inspection on January 3 in Istanbul resulted in a clearance for the ship to continue its voyage.

The Suez Canal, which offers the quickest connection between Europe and Asia, was closed in March 2021 for six days when another ship, the Ever Given, became jammed horizontally in strong winds.

The obstruction caused ships to back up and momentarily halted international trade in several items.

  • Rolls Royce’s sales were evenly distributed across the US, Greater China, and Europe.
  • Torsten Müller-tvös, CEO of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars says “Sales are not our only metric of success”.

Dubai: Sales in the Gulf and Middle East operations increased 38%, contributing to Rolls-Royce Motor Cars’ British super-luxury automobile manufacturer’s record 6,021 global deliveries in 2022.

The total for the entire year is up 8% from 2021 worldwide. (The regional split is not yet available.)

Rolls Royce‘s sales were evenly distributed across the US, Greater China, and Europe, and the company’s order book “stretches far into 2023,” indicating that everything is truly going well at the high end of the automotive retail sector.

In addition to exceeding “ambitious goals,” the firm will add a spark from the pre-orders received for the entire all-electric Spectre.

According to Torsten Müller-tvös, CEO of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, “it was also the first year we have delivered more than 6,000 cars in a single 12-month period, with high demand across our whole product spectrum.” But as a real “House of Luxury,” we are not and never will be a volume producer, therefore sales are not our only metric of success.

“Bespoke is Rolls-Royce, and commissions were also at record levels last year,” according to the company. “Our clients’ requirements are getting ever more innovative and technically challenging, a challenge we heartily welcome.”

Rolls saw success with its bespoke division in the Gulf and UAE regions. The firm stated of its regional operations that “bespoke commissions continued at record levels in 2022.” Phantom ‘The Six Elements,’ which was co-created in exceptional cooperation with internationally renowned artist Sacha Jafri, was the year’s high point.

This was a set of six unique Phantom Series II Extended models, each with a Sacha Jafri Gallery and inspired by one of six elements: Earth, Fire, Wind, Water, or Air. The sixth element was Humanity. César Habib, Regional Director said.

“The year also saw the launch of Private Office in Dubai, the first of its type outside the Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood, bringing the brand closer to our clients and underscoring the importance of the Middle East to the company’s broader strategy,” the company’s statement reads.

Bus crash near Kenya-Uganda border results in 21 deaths and 49 injuries

Crash
  • A bus traveling to Nairobi, Kenya, collapsed shortly after entering Kenya from Uganda.
  • The driver appeared to lose control, causing the car to drift off the road.
  • Eight Ugandans and eight Kenyans were killed.

A bus traveling to Nairobi, Kenya, collapsed shortly after entering Kenya from Uganda, according to authorities, resulting in at least 21 deaths and 49 injuries. This incident is the most recent in a string of catastrophic traffic incidents that have occurred recently.

Eight Ugandans and eight Kenyans were killed according to Rogers Taitika, spokesman for the Ugandan regional police, who spoke to the AFP news agency.

The bus, which was traveling from the city of Mbale in eastern Uganda to Nairobi, crashed late on Saturday in the Kenyan town of Lwakhakha, which is just across the border from a town with the same name in Uganda.

According to Taitika, the driver appeared to lose control, causing the car to drift off the road.

He continued, “Preliminary findings indicate a case of over-speeding by the bus driver.”

Following a recent spike in accidents in the East African nation of Uganda, the government is preparing to announce new initiatives to try to enhance road safety.

16 persons were killed on January 6 when a passenger bus plowed into a stopped truck close to the city of Gulu in northern Uganda.

In addition to the victims of the most recent incidents in January, the Ugandan police report that 104 road crashes were reported in just three days over the New Year holiday between December 30 and January 1, resulting in 35 deaths and 114 injuries.

At the funeral on January 2 for three siblings who died in a collision, security minister Jim Muhwezi said the cabinet was developing new safety measures to attempt to lower the frequency of accidents.

Mahinda Rajapaksa, Ex prime minister of Sri Lanka, declares his support for Wickremesinghe

Sri Lanka
  • The former prime minister of Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapaksa gave his first public speech on Saturday.
  • Mahinda initially seemed confused over who was the country’s current president.
  • A staff member snuck up behind him to correct him.

Mahinda Rajapaksa, the former prime minister of Sri Lanka, gave his first public speech on Saturday following the ousting of his younger brother, the former president Gotabaya Rajapaksa, in July and his forced resignation in May.

The 77-year-old Mahinda initially seemed confused over who was the country’s current president while speaking at a public event hosted by his party Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) in Kalutara here.

When he mentioned Gotabaya as the president, a staff member snuck up behind him to correct him.

Mahinda quickly corrected his error and added, “To defend this government, we will continue to stand for President Ranil Wickremesinghe. He was once on our side; now he is against us.”

Violent nationwide protests

Following violent nationwide protests against them for causing the island nation to experience its greatest economic crisis since gaining independence in 1948, the entire Rajapaksa clan was forced to quit the government earlier this year.

on May 9, Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned after his supporters attacked anti-government protestors, sparking fatal riots around the nation. Many political figures’ homes, including some owned by the Rajapaksas, were set on fire.

The military was called in to remove Mahinda from Temple Trees, his official residence after it came under siege from irate mobs.

For his safety, he was confined to a naval facility in Trincomalee, in the country’s northeast. Additionally, he is prohibited from leaving the country by a Colombo court.

After Mahinda, who served as president twice and the prime minister three times, resigned on May 9, some riots resulted in at least nine fatalities and over 200 injuries. 58 of his government coworkers have had arson attempts made on their private property.

Wickremesinghe, a leader of the opposition and a longtime foe of the Rajapaksas, succeeded Mahinda as prime minister.

Gotabaya left Sri Lanka for the Maldives in the middle of July before traveling to Singapore, where he resigned on July 14. Later, in need of a temporary home, he traveled to Thailand.

Wickremesinghe then took office as president by the Constitution for the remainder of Gotabaya’s term, which lasts until 2024.

After Wickremesinghe was elected president, the protests were put to an end, and those responsible for the demonstrators’ forced occupation of government buildings were prosecuted.

Meanwhile, Gotabaya also returned to Sri Lanka on September 3.

Six-year-old boy detained in the US after shooting a teacher

  • Six-year-old child in the eastern US state of Virginia opened fire in a classroom.
  • Victim was a 30-year-old teacher whose injuries were life-threatening.
  • The teacher was badly injured.

Washington: A six-year-old child in the eastern US state of Virginia opened fire in a classroom at an elementary school on Friday, badly injuring a teacher, according to the police.

“The student involved is six years old. Steve Drew, the local police chief, stated at a news conference that “this was not an accident shooting” and that “he is currently in police custody.”

According to police, the victim was a 30-year-old teacher whose injuries were life-threatening.

“I’m in shock, and I’m disheartened,” said the city’s superintendent of schools, George Parker.

“We need the community’s support to make sure that guns are not available to youth.”

The recent tragedy of an 18-year-old gunman killing 19 children and two teachers in Uvalde, Texas last May is only one example of the tragic trend of school shootings in the US.

According to the Gun Violence Archive database, there were an estimated 44,000 gun-related deaths in the US every year, with half of those deaths occurring as a result of homicide, accidents, or self-defense, and the other half as a result of suicide.

Billionaire Jack Ma to give up control of China’s Ant group

Jack Ma
  • Jack Ma indirectly owned 53.46% of his shares.
  • he will only possess 6.2% of the voting rights after the adjustment.
  • The adjustment will not change the economic interests of any shareholders.

BEIJING: In response to a Communist Party assault on the country’s internet sector that singled out the flamboyant billionaire, Jack Ma will cede leadership of Chinese fintech behemoth Ant Group, the business announced on Saturday.

Ma, one of China‘s most well-known businessmen, once exemplified a generation of Chinese technology moguls with his rags-to-riches personal story and fondness for public spectacle.

However, the former English teacher has withdrawn from the public eye after Beijing destroyed Ant’s anticipated IPO in Hong Kong in 2020 as a result of his scathing remarks about government regulators.

In a statement released on Saturday, his business announced changes to its ownership structure that would prevent “any shareholder, acting alone or in concert with other parties, from exercising control over Ant Group.”

The notice outlined the company’s previous complicated organizational structure and stated that Ant was the “control person” because Ma indirectly owned 53.46% of his shares.

Based on the information in the statement, he will only possess 6.2% of the voting rights after the adjustment.

The Ant statement stated that the modification was made to further improve the stability of the company’s corporate structure and the sustainability of its long-term growth.

Ten individuals — including the founder, management, and staff — will “exercise their voting rights independently”, it said.

The adjustment will not change the economic interests of any shareholders.

What price Kevin McCarthy has given up?

Kevin McCarthy

The California congressman was able to persuade enough of the 20 holdout Republicans to back him—or at the very least, not expressly oppose—his campaign for the Speaker’s gavel by combination of cajoling, arm-twisting, and finger-jabbing.

But it was not an easy task to persuade those recalcitrant Republicans to join. As a result of Mr. McCarthy’s commitments and significant compromises, the influence of conservatives in the House of Representatives increased while his power has been curtailed.

Concession: An election with only one member.

The option for only one lawmaker to start a vote on whether to remove the Speaker from office was one of the main demands of the Republican holdouts. The metaphorical sword hangs over his head for the whole time he is in charge of the gavel since this “move to vacate” may lead to another round of votes in the House similar to what we have witnessed this past week.

Cost: Although the motion to vacate rule has a long history in Congress, the threshold for its activation has recently been raised to five to prevent a single member from jeopardizing the Speaker’s authority. Despite the holdouts’ assurances that they won’t misuse the privilege if it is reinstated, Mr. McCarthy’s grasp on power will be considerably more fragile.

Concession: There is no simple way to pass legislation

People who have taken US civics classes or are Schoolhouse Rock! fans may remember learning about how bills go through the House of Representatives. A politician introduces them, which are then sent to a committee for study and amendment, presented before Congress and further altered, and then put to an up-or-down vote.

Nowadays, when major expenditure legislation is discussed behind closed doors and swiftly approved with minimal discussion, that is not how things frequently proceed. By giving members of Congress who are not part of the top leadership greater influence over how laws are introduced, revised, and approved, Mr. McCarthy vowed to return the process of enacting legislation to more akin to the good old days.

Cost: Legislating is difficult, especially in light of contemporary party differences, which is why normal order has mostly disappeared. A small group of lawmakers with an agenda may easily sabotage the laborious process of creating new legislation. Even if going back to the original game rules is a good idea, Mr. McCarthy may find it difficult to maintain his word.

Concession: Conservatives may set the rules

The House Rules Committee primarily establishes the ground rules for debate on the House floor, as its name may imply. It is up to the committee to decide whether or not a measure can be amended on the floor and how long it will be debated before it is put to a vote. Mr. McCarthy has pledged to give the staunchest conservatives at least one vote in this influential body.

Cost: A seat at the table gets you into the game. With stronger participation on the Rules Committee, conservatives will be able to mold the type of legislation produced by the House before it takes shape – and nip undesirable proposals in the bud.

Concession: Taking prominent responsibilities away from supporters

Several holdouts have their sights set on the gavels of powerful House committees. Andy Harris of Maryland, for example, has indicated an interest in chairing the House Appropriations Committee’s health subcommittee, which oversees billions of dollars in federal spending. On Friday afternoon, Mr. Harris moved his allegiance to Mr. McCarthy. Mr. McCarthy has made no public pledges, but lawmakers will be watching to see whether any Republicans are rewarded for their stubbornness.

Cost: Giving a committee chair to a holdout means taking it away from a committed McCarthy supporter who should have been next in line based on seniority. Mr. McCarthy may alienate some members of his party if he makes too many promises to his erstwhile opponents.

Concession: Spending restraints

Hard-core conservatives frequently worry that federal expenditure has risen to unsustainable levels. They have asked Mr. McCarthy to commit to tangible fiscal restraints during the Speaker fight, such as cutting spending to 2022 levels, requiring that any increase in the amount of debt issued by the government be tied to corresponding budget cuts, and allowing individual lines of spending to be removed from larger legislation through votes on the House floor.

Cost: Republicans will be able to approve any budget levels they agree on with a majority in the House. Mr. McCarthy has committed to vote with budget hawks in intra-party arguments, which has already enraged those conservatives concerned about significant cutbacks to defense expenditure. To approve budget legislation, Republicans in the House will eventually have to work with Democrats in the Senate. Mr. McCarthy’s vows here may limit his ability to reach the kinds of agreements required to prevent a government shutdown later this year.

Concession: Prioritize their concerns.

Term restrictions in Congress and border security have been regular themes of discussion among Republican holdouts. Mr. McCarthy is said to have agreed to conduct votes on both early next year.

Cost: Regardless of what the holdouts desired, the House was going to take up the immigration issue immediately, since strengthening border security and immigration policy have been central to the Republican agenda since Donald Trump’s presidential campaign began in 2015. Term limitations would very certainly need a constitutional amendment to be implemented. State attempts to limit the tenure of members of Congress have previously been found unlawful by the Supreme Court.
