Anupam Kher fails to buy Uunchai ticket as shows are housefull

This Friday marks the theatrical release of Anupam Kher movie Uunchai. The movie adopted Rajshri Productions’ technique of opening on a small number of screens and gradually expanding that number over the course of the first few days. Anupam shared a video of himself trying to purchase a cinema ticket on Twitter on Saturday night. The video showed him in Mumbai. The actor was informed at the box office that every performance was sold out, so he was forced to leave empty-handed.

Anupam’s video started with him approaching a ticket window while wearing a suit and telling the audience that he is coming to purchase a ticket for Uunchai. But the teller there informs him that Uunchai’s performances are consistently sold out. The actor requests one but is turned down. A bemused Anupam says in Hindi, “He is refusing me. I have acted in this film. Only one, I can even stand and watch.” However, the teller doesn’t budge.

Anupam eventually starts to giggle and turns around to head back toward the director of the movie, Sooraj Barjatya, who is standing some distance away. Sooraj chuckles as Anupam informs him that there are no tickets left because every performance is sold out. As the two walk away, someone off-camera says, “Amazing movie, sir!” Sharing the video on Twitter, Anupam wrote in Hindi, “I could not get the ticket of Uunchai movie. For the first time, saw success in failure. I’m so happy I may go mad. Anything can happen. Hahaha

Aside from Anupam, other actors in Uunchai include Amitabh Bachchan, Boman Irani, Neena Gupta, Parineeti Chopra, and Sarika. Despite a restricted release, the movie has received positive reviews from reviewers and a strong start at the box office. On Friday and Saturday, the movie played to packed houses in several regions of India, as Anupam’s video also emphasised.
In India, Uunchai made 1.81 crore net on its first day of release, which is a respectable sum given that there were only about 500 theatres available for the movie. Given the great word-of-mouth the movie is creating, more screens are anticipated to be added.
