Tom Cruise is a Hollywood star. The Star of Taps (1981) and Endless Love (1981) can still compete with younger actors in Top Gun and Mission: Impossible. The Golden Globes winner helped and saved a brand on his 60th birthday. Ray-Ban is a luxury American-Italian eyewear brand, created in 1936 by Bausch & Lomb.

One of Tom Cruise’s most recognizable scenes is from his 1983 film Risky Business, even though he is now best known for giving action-packed performances in high-octane movies like the Top Gun and Mission Impossible franchises. In Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock and Roll,” Cruise can be seen dancing around the house while wearing only his underwear. Although many people believe he also wore shades in this scene, this is untrue; instead, he wore Ray-Ban sunglasses throughout the rest of the movie and on the movie’s posters.

According to the media, when Cruise wore the Wayfarers in 1983 hit Risky Business, the eyewear’s sales increased by roughly 50% (to about 360,000 pairs) at a time when the Ray-Ban brand was only selling about 200,000 pairs annually (this increased from 18,000 after GQ used it for one of their features). By 1988, 3 to 4 million Wayfarers were being sold annually by Bausch + Lomb. This was a result of viewers’ wanting to dress as Cruise did in the movie.

However, Tom Cruise wore Ray-Ban sunglasses numerous times, which helped the company sell millions of pairs. Ray-Ban aviators were worn by Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in the 1986 movie Top Gun. The audience adored it once more, and they went shopping to purchase their own pairs of aviators. Sales increased by about 40% as a result of audience members wanting to adopt Tom’s appearance. As orders for the same kept coming in, the brand was producing about 4.5 million aviators by 1988.

Even though they frequently go out of fashion, Cruise still adores his Ray-Ban Wayfarers and Aviators. When asked by reporters in 2013 at the Star Trek: Into Darkness premiere, if his stylish dark sunglasses were 3-D glasses for the movie, the actor responded, “No, man. There are Ray-Bans. “
