Evil Dead, in the appropriately titled Evil Dead Rise, is one of the most notable franchises making a sinister comeback.

The highly anticipated film will be released in April, and producer Bruce Campbell has released a new image teasing that this latest horror story is a family affair.

Campbell’s image, which is part of Brucefest 2022, depicts Lilly Sullivan’s Beth in front of a group of people who are horrifiedly staring at what appears to be her sister Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland).

Ellie doesn’t appear to be in good spirits, as the disturbing shot shows her up close and personal with the camera. All that is visible are her eyes, one of which is completely rolled back in her head.

The Deadites appear to have gained complete control. “For the Deadites who weren’t able to make it to BruceFest this year, I’m very excited to share this shot of the family from Evil Dead Rise. See them come together or be torn apart only in theaters April 21.”

While the plot of Rise is still unknown, the main focus will be on two estranged sisters, Beth and Ellie, who reunite after many years apart. Ellie lives in a high-rise apartment building in the heart of Los Angeles, which already sets a very different tone for the series than the usual “cabin in the woods” type settings.

Following a series of unfortunate events, Beth and Ellie discover the infamous Necronomicon, which quickly takes Ellie’s soul.

This film appears to have a heavy emotional hook of family in the vein of Evil Dead (2013). The image depicts the beginning of Ellie’s transformation, and if she’s anything like previous franchise characters like Mia, her family is in for a blood-soaked nightmare.

What’s worse, Ellie has children, which means there’s bound to be a lot of trauma in their future, with a lot of potential for some unique mind-bending horror sequences.

Evil Dead is a rare franchise with no bad entries. Each of its film instalments, on top of its successful TV series, has never repeated itself.

It’s a campy horror film one minute, a gothic slapstick comedy the next, and then a hard-R scary bloodbath the next.

Rise appears to be more in line with the pure horror of Evil Dead (2013). Given the film’s popularity, this should please many horror fans.

While we wait for the first trailer and to see if this family survives, you can watch Evil Dead 2013 on Hulu right now.

On April 21, 2023, Evil Dead Rise will be released exclusively in theatres.
