With “Wicked” nearing its release, Bowen Yang shared that the cast often gathered to sing songs from past musicals between takes. Speaking to news Yang, who plays Pfannee, revealed that whenever the director called “cut,” the team would come together and break into songs from classics like “Rent” and “Next to Normal”.
The upcoming fantasy film features Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in the lead roles, with Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, and Jeff Goldblum in key supporting roles. Yeoh takes on the character of Madame Morrible, Bailey portrays Fiyero Tigelaar, Slater plays Boq, and Goldblum stars as the Wizard.
In an interview with the media, Yang shared, “Cynthia needed to maintain Elphaba’s aloof and reserved demeanor. So it was refreshing to watch her let loose between takes.”
Goldblum also shared that he and Grande would sing along to the lyrics of “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” during their shoots. The 72-year-old went on to reveal, “We sang it together, and then she did it again on my phone. Oh my God in heaven—it was music, music, music.”
Alongside the cast members singing between takes, Yeoh shared that she also had to sing in the film for her character. She revealed that while she can sing, she considers herself mostly a “shower singer.”
The Oscar-winning star stated, “I love singing. But normally it’s in the shower, not when there are other people around,” she says. But she’d need to carry a tune to play Madam Morrible, so she worked with a vocal coach before heading to set. “I was hitting notes that I never thought that I would try.”
Meanwhile, “Wicked” follows a young woman often misunderstood because of her green skin. When she enters an educational institution, she meets Grande’s character, and over time, the two form a deep friendship.
“Wicked” is set to hit theaters on November 22.
