The acclaimed production of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire, which stars recently announced Academy Award nominee Paul Mescal in the role of Stanley Kowalski, is scheduled to transfer to the Phoenix Theater in West End London for a constrained six-week run, according to a new report from Deadline. The release of Ridley Scott’s Gladiator 2, the follow-up to the director’s 2000 epic starring Russell Crowe, has been delayed by two weeks from its planned March 2023 start date as a result of the news of the new theatrical run for the acclaimed production.

The news of Rebecca Frecknall’s A Streetcar Named Desire making its way to a West End stage comes just after Mescal’s highly acclaimed performance in Charlotte Wells’ Aftersun earned him his first-ever Academy Award nomination for “Best Actor.” The stage drama is currently playing at the 370-seat Almeida Theatre in London’s Islington, where it will continue to do so through February 4. Following the announcement of Mescal’s nomination, Almeida’s box office manager observed a “tsunami” of requests for tickets to the performance, according to Deadline.

A Streetcar Named Desire will have a fantastic run in the theater’s 1,012 seats, according to Adam Speers, the executive in charge of productions at the Ambassador Theatre Group, who told Deadline that. The Phoenix Theatre will feel like the biggest rock band in the world has reformed for one final performance, the statement continued. The Phoenix performance is scheduled to start on March 20 and is anticipated to sell out as soon as the box office opens for general sales on February 1. With this run, Gladiator 2 will now start filming about two weeks later than anticipated.

The Part of Paul Mescal in Gladiator 2

Lucius Versus, played by Mescal, is the film’s main character. He is Commodus’ nephew and the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen). It will pick up several years after the first movie and continue Lucius’s tale as a grown man. After the first draught of the movie, written by David Scarpa, was handed off in November of last year, Mescal and Scott reportedly started holding serious meetings for the part. It has been stated that Mescal was Scott’s favorite choice for the role, however, other actors including Richard Madden and Timothée Chalamet, as well as hot-shot movie stars Miles Teller and Austin Butler, were also considered.
