‘Jumanji: Open World’ trailer brings video game chaos into reality

LOS ANGELES: What happens when video game heroes escape their digital world and enter real life? Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Karen Gillan face that unexpected challenge in the first trailer for “Jumanji: Open World,” released Tuesday, as Sony Pictures prepares to bring the latest chapter of the adventure franchise to theaters on Dec. 25.
Directed by Jake Kasdan, the upcoming movie changes the franchise’s familiar concept, instead of teenagers entering a dangerous video game, the characters from inside the game escape into the real world and create unexpected chaos.
The trailer shows Johnson, Black, Hart and Gillan portraying game inspired versions of themselves as they try to understand life outside the digital world. The characters struggle with their unusual situation as they discover that they are no longer limited to the game environment.
In the trailer, Alex Wolff’s character explains the problem by saying the characters are “video game characters” who are trapped in “demo mode,” creating a new challenge for the team.

The film features a returning ensemble cast, including Nick Jonas, Alex Wolff, Morgan Turner, Ser’Darius Blain, Madison Iseman, Rhys Darby and Danny DeVito.
Kasdan, who directed the previous films “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” in 2017 and “Jumanji: The Next Level” in 2019, also co-wrote the new movie with Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg. He serves as a producer alongside Johnson, Matt Tolmach, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia.
The “Jumanji” franchise has become one of Sony Pictures successful modern film series. The 2017 reboot, “Welcome to the Jungle,” earned more than $950 million worldwide, while “The Next Level” collected more than $801 million globally.
The series is based on Chris Van Allsburg’s 1981 children’s book, which was previously adapted into the 1995 film starring Robin Williams.
Johnson, Hart and Black first introduced footage from “Jumanji: Open World” and revealed the film’s title during CinemaCon earlier this year. Black told the audience that the new installment was his favorite entry in the franchise so far.
With its new storyline, returning stars and a holiday release date, “Jumanji: Open World” aims to bring a fresh direction to the action comedy series while delivering the same humor and adventure that attracted audiences worldwide.
