A mini-bus carrying a family to a holiday beach getaway in Mexico crashed into a lumber truck on Wednesday.

It caught fire, killing 14 people including five children, authorities said.

Many of the victims trapped inside burning mini-bus, whose charred chassis could be seen impaled on the back of the truck on the highway from the family’s native Guanajuato state to Pacific beach resort of Puerto Vallarta.

Twelve more people injured in the pre-dawn crash in the western state of Jalisco.

Two in serious condition and airlifted to a hospital in the state capital, Guadalajara, said state emergency authorities.

Samuel Flores of the Jalisco state civil protection service said its tourism service hired by a family traveling to Puerto Vallarta for the holidays.

Mexico often hit by deadly accidents during the Christmas season, as roads fill with vacationers and revelers.

The vehicle slammed into the back of another bus that had stopped for passengers.

The second bus then crashed into another that was stationary in front of it.

Initial reports counted nine dead, among them a three-year-old child.

However, Civil Protection officials raised the count to 11 when rescue workers found two more bodies inside the wreckage.

Ecatepec firefighters and Civil Protection officials arrived on the scene along with five paramedics units to tend to the injured and remove the dead from the wreckage.

The crash closed the Mexico-Pachuca highway into the hours, and traffic diverted onto an adjacent highway.
