A landmark building in Beirut’s commercial district caught fire on Tuesday, Lebanese media reported.

The landmark building was designed by the late British-Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid.

According to Reuters, a Lebanese civil defense official confirmed that the fire was brought under control shortly after.

Reports say that the building had been under construction for years and was about to be completed.

The incident happened two days after white smoke appeared from the Beirut port on Saturday night. Officials said the smoke emitted from remnants of a previous fire days earlier.

“The white smoke is caused by the evaporation of water and ongoing operations to put out the remnants of the fire (last Tuesday) … firefighters are continuing their work, there is no danger and the fire is contained,” Beirut firefighter brigade, Ali Najm had reported to the international news agency.
