A suicide bomber has blown himself up and killed at least 13 people and injured 30 others near an education centre in the Afghan capital, Kabul.

According to the foreign news agency AFP, the attack took place in the afternoon near an educational centre in the western district of Kabul, which is training and conducting courses for higher education students.

“The suicide bomber wanted to enter the education centre,” Afghan Interior Ministry spokesman Tariq Arain said in a statement.

He said the suicide bomber blew himself up outside after being identified by centre guards.

He said that according to initial reports, 13 people were killed and 30 injured in the blast.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

In the past, extremists have targeted several educational institutions and facilities in the area.

In May, a group of gunmen attacked a hospital in western Kabul, killing several women.

The attackers were killed by security forces after hours of fighting.

Despite talks between the Taliban and the Afghan government on ending the war, tensions in Afghanistan have risen in recent weeks.
