Danish Foreign Minister Jeppe Kofod announced the reopening of Denmark’s embassy in Kyiv on Monday during a surprise visit to the Ukrainian capital.

“It is a very strong symbol of Danish support for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people that today we are reopening the doors of the Danish embassy,” Kofod said in a statement.

The action, which follows similar moves by other Western countries, was not announced ahead of time.

Following Russia’s invasion of its pro-Western neighbour, Denmark closed its embassy.

On April 21, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and her Spanish colleague, Pedro Sanchez, paid a visit to Kyiv.

Frederiksen announced an extra 600 million Danish kroner ($85 million, 81 million euros) in military aid to Ukraine during her visit, increasing Denmark’s total military contribution to one billion kroner.

Denmark is the first Nordic country to reestablish its embassy in Ukraine.

According to the foreign ministry, it would start with a small workforce and gradually increase to regular levels.
