In Hamburg, Germany, police are currently handling a hostage situation at the airport. This incident began when an armed 35-year-old man breached a security barrier and drove onto the tarmac.
The man, accompanied by a 4-year-old child, is currently inside the vehicle parked beneath an aircraft.
Law enforcement officers have established communication with the driver, who initially entered the airport around 20:00 local time on Saturday evening (19:00 GMT).
Consequently, Hamburg Airport has been temporarily closed, and all flights have been suspended until further notice.
A spokesperson from the Hamburg police described the ongoing situation on Sunday as “tense,” but the continued communication with the suspect is seen as a positive sign.
“We have to consider that he has a gun with him and we also have to consider that he possibly has some explosive devices with him,” Sandra Levgruen said, adding that the child is thought to be unharmed.
The incident initiated when the man drove his car onto the airport’s apron, which is typically designated for aircraft parking. Local media reports indicate that he parked his vehicle beneath a Turkish Airlines plane.
According to the police, the man discharged his firearm twice into the air and hurled incendiary bottles from the car.
Authorities suspect that the situation revolves around a “custody dispute.” The child’s mother reportedly contacted emergency services, notifying them that the four-year-old had been taken.
Ms. Levgruen stated that the man disagreed with certain decisions made by the authorities regarding the custody arrangement and had intentions to travel to Turkey with the child.
“He speaks about his life being a heap of shards,” she said.
Local media sources have stated that negotiations with the man are being carried out in Turkish with the assistance of a translator. However, his connection to the country remains unclear.
The police have mentioned that they have psychologists and negotiation specialists present at the scene, along with special forces.
Hamburg Airport reported that approximately half of the scheduled departures and arrivals for Sunday have been canceled, and some flights have been rerouted.
They have cautioned that additional delays and cancellations should be expected throughout the day.
