WASHINGTON – U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a 25% tariff on goods imported from India, set to take effect from 1st August.

The decision was revealed through a statement on his social media platform Truth Social, where he also hinted at an additional, unspecified penalty India will face from the same date.

While President Trump did not provide details about the nature of this additional measure, he made it clear that it would accompany the tariff move.

“India is our friend, but our trade relationship has been unbalanced for years,” Trump said. He criticized India’s trade practices, stating that its tariffs are among the highest in the world, and described its non-tariff trade barriers as extremely harsh and unacceptable.

Trump also raised concerns over India’s continued military purchases from Russia and its energy dealings. “India has consistently bought large quantities of military equipment from Russia and, along with China, remains one of Russia’s biggest energy customers,” he said.

“At a time when the world wants Russia to end the bloodshed in Ukraine, such actions are not helpful,” the President added.

The announcement has sparked concern over rising trade tensions between the U.S. and India at a time of heightened global geopolitical sensitivities.
