Amazon beats Walmart in race for top fortune 500 ranking

Walmart remains a leader in traditional retail and continues to operate thousands of stores across the United States

Amazon has reached a major milestone by becoming the largest company on the Fortune 500 list. The company moved ahead of Walmart and claimed the No. 1 position based on fiscal 2025 revenue. This change ended Walmart’s 13 year run at the top of the annual ranking of America biggest companies.

Amazon reported about $717 billion in revenue during the latest reporting period. Walmart followed closely with around $713 billion in revenue. United Health Group secured third place after generating $447.6 billion in revenue.

The achievement marks the first time since 2013 that Walmart has not held the top spot. Walmart remains a leader in traditional retail and continues to operate thousands of stores across the United States. However, Amazon’s wider range of businesses helped it move ahead.

Amazon saw strong growth across several areas. Its online shopping business remained a key source of revenue. The company also expanded its cloud computing, advertising, and third party seller services. These segments played an important role in boosting overall sales.

Revenue at Amazon increased by about 12% compared with the previous year. In contrast, Walmart recorded growth of roughly 5%. The stronger growth rate gave Amazon the edge in the latest rankings.

Amazon web services, the company’s cloud division, generated nearly $129 billion in revenue in 2025. At the same time, Amazon’s advertising business brought in more than $68 billion. Both divisions continue to grow and support the company’s success.

With its diverse business model and steady expansion, Amazon has now secured the top position on the fortune 500 list and set a new benchmark for corporate growth.
