LONDON: Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler has died at the age of 75 in a hospital of Portugal after a serious illness, her family announced.
The singer’s family and management said Tyler unexpectedly passed away while receiving treatment. Tyler, best known for her powerful voice and international hit songs, had recently faced health challenges.
In May, she was admitted to a hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she underwent emergency intestinal surgery and was placed in an induced coma during her recovery.
Tyler had come out of the coma but remained in intensive care. Although doctors were hopeful about her recovery, her progress was described as slow.
Following her hospitalization, several dates from her planned summer tour were canceled or postponed, with hopes that some performances could take place later in the year.
Tyler’s last performance was held at London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire on March 19, which she described as a memorable night. A planned concert in Cardiff was later moved to December.
Family friend Owen Money remembered Tyler as someone who loved life and described her as a Welsh icon. He said he had known her since the late 1960s, before she became internationally famous.
Welsh First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth also paid tribute, calling Tyler a true icon whose music brought happiness to people around the world.
Fans and fellow artists have continued to honor Tyler’s decade’s long career and lasting impact on the music industry.
