Zara Rutherford, the pilot of Belgian-British nationality wishes to pursue her passion as a pilot and hopes to inspire other young women who are pursuing their dreams. Her parents are also pilots.

According to Rutherford’s father, Sam, “This is her dream. It’s what she wants to do.”

“I am very, very proud that she wants to try and attract more young women and girls into STEM and aviation because 5% of pilots in the world are women. That’s not a statistic [of] which we should be proud,” he added.

Zara Rutherford took off in her Shark ultralight, the world’s fastest microlight aircraft, from Kortrijk-Wevelgem Airport in western Belgium.

The voyage is projected to take over 250 hours of flying time, or around three months in total, assuming one or two night stays along the way.
