KARACHI: The Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) on Monday changed the in-charge of demolition squad at Nasla Tower, for the building as it was “being demolished slapdash without technical experts”.

“A hasty demolition operation can lead to an accident,” the secretary of SBCA’s technical team said expressing distrust over the ongoing work. He said pillars of the tower were being razed without breaking walls, which is dangerous.

He apprised the deputy commissioner East about his distrust over the demolition work. He also expressed concern over ascending the heavy machinery to the upper floor of the tower.

The SBCA technical team’s secretary recommended handing over the operation to the company selected by the Karachi commissioner’s selection committee. “The district administration is getting the Nasla Tower operation done through a contractor instead of a company approved by the committee,” he said.

The SBCA official said an operation performed in panic and haste could lead to a tragedy.

Sajjad Khan, who has extensive experience in demolition operations, has been appointed in-charge of the Nasla Tower operation.

On November 28, the local administration had imposed Section 144 around Nasla Tower as demolition work on the building continued on order of the Supreme Court.
