The (TSA) Transportation Security Administration has issued new directions and recommendations targeted at strengthening rail and airport operators’ cybersecurity defenses.

According to the Biden administration, the regulations, which were made public, are part of a larger effort to defend the nation’s critical infrastructure from continuous cyber espionage and an increase in disruptive ransomware attacks,

“These new cybersecurity requirements and recommendations will help keep the traveling public safe,” Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said in a statement.

The new TSA directives require most passenger and freight rail operators must now designate a cybersecurity point person, report incidents to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency within 24 hours, conduct a vulnerability assessment, and develop a contingency and recovery plan in the event of malicious cyber activity. They will take effect at the end of the year, and the TSA has announced that it will make similar modifications for airport operators.
