ISLAMABAD: The petitions for the revision of the rules regarding social media devised by the PTI government under Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), 2016 have been sent to the parliament by the Islamabad High Court (IHC), reported Bol News on Wednesday.

During the hearing of the case, IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah remarked that the members of the incumbent government opposed the impugned rules when they were in opposition. “Now, they are in power,” he went on to say.

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) lawyer Farhatullah Babar appeared before the court. The chief justice asked Babar to revise the rules as they strongly objected to them when they were in the opposition. The counsel suggested the court forward the matter to the parliament.

The court observed that the government should consult with the stakeholders in this regard and resolve the issues, deeming it the appropriate course.

He remarked that the rules should be crystal-clear, having no ambiguity so that they cannot be misused later.

The court ordered to send the rules of social media under PECA to the speaker of the National Assembly (NA) for consideration of the parliament.
