Lahore: The Punjab Defamation Law 2024 passed by the Punjab Assembly has been challenged in the Lahore High Court(LHC).
A petition against the defamation law was filed in the Lahore High Court by journalist Jaffar Ahmed Yar and citizen Raja Riaz.
The Chief Minister, Governor Punjab and Punjab Government have been made parties in the petition.
It should be noted that the Defamation Bill 2024 passed by the Punjab Assembly has become a formal law after the signing of Acting Governor Malik Ahmed Khan last night.
President Lahore Press Club(LHC) Arshad Ansari condemned the approval of Defamation Bill by the Acting Governor Punjab and said that the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) also cheated the journalists.
He said the PPP was with the journalists from the top but was mixed with the government from the inside and the governor. The bill was approved by sending him on leave.
Arshad Ansari said that the Joint Action Committee will decide the future course of action.
Defamation Bill 2024 Bill will apply to print, electronic and social media, defamation case can be filed on false, untrue news spread.
The bill will also apply to fake news spread through YouTube and social media. Action will also be taken on the news spread to harm personal life and public place.
Tribunals will be set up for defamation cases which will be bound to decide within 6 months.
