Google launches Android 16 Beta 1 for Pixel devices with new features
Google has rolled out the first beta of Android 16, giving Pixel users an early preview of the newest features in its mobile operating system.
Android 16 Beta 1 is accessible as an over-the-air update for devices registered in the Android Beta Programme, introducing a range of exciting updates for both users and developers. Google is actively encouraging developers to test their applications and provide valuable feedback.
A major addition is Live Updates, a new notification system tailored for ongoing activities such as food delivery, ridesharing, and navigation. These notifications offer improved updates with customizable icons and real-time progress tracking.
Another noteworthy improvement is enhanced app compatibility for larger screens. Google is removing restrictions on screen orientation and resizability for apps targeting API levels 36 and higher.
This ensures that apps on devices with screens wider than 600dp will automatically resize, providing a smoother user experience across various devices.
The beta also introduces support for the Advanced Professional Video (APV) codec, significantly enhancing video quality for 2K, 4K, and even 8K content. The APV codec ensures near-lossless video quality and streamlined post-production workflows, making it a valuable feature for professional content creators.
Additional upgrades include improved predictive back animations, camera indicators for night mode, and support for vertical text rendering, alongside various enhancements to refine user experience and functionality.
The Android 16 Beta 1 update is compatible with Pixel 6, 7, 8, and 9 series devices, along with the Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet. Users already participating in the Android Beta Programme or using Developer Preview 2 can install the update via the Beta Feedback app or Quick Settings.
Android 16 Beta 1 showcases Google’s commitment to innovation, setting the stage for the platform’s full release.
