KARACHI: Pakistan is wilting under a heatwave, with the temperature in places reaching 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit).

Karachi has recorded 42 degrees Celsius temperature while the mercury has reached 50 degrees Celsius in different parts of Sindh including Mohenjo-Daro, Nawabshah, Larkana, Jacobabad, Dadu and Badin.

On the other hand, Punjab recorded the lowest temperature of 42 degrees Celsius and the highest of 48 degrees Celsius during the day.

In addition, Balochistan has seen a similar increase in the intensity of heat in view of which the minimum temperature has been recorded at 33.5 while 49 has been recorded.

The National Institutes of Health has issued a heatstroke guideline in the wake of the recent high temperature.

According to the guidelines issued, heatstroke is a medical condition which can be fatal if not treated in time.

Symptoms include hot and dry skin, weakness or lethargy, fever, headache, and rapid heartbeat.

If heatstroke is not treated properly in time, it can cause damage to limbs, including death, or even disability.

Infants, people over the age of 65, people with diabetes and high blood pressure, athletes and outdoor workers are at higher risk of heatstroke.

Pakistan met department also issued the following advisory:

  • The general public is advised to avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight and take precautionary measures.
  • Farmers are advised to manage crop water accordingly.
  • Special care should be taken for the needs of livestock and pets.
  • Judicious use of water is requested in all aspects of life.
