ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad court has rejected plea of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) seeking physical remand of Bol News reporter Shahid Aslam in the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) data leaks case, Bol News reported.
Instead, the court has granted 14-day judicial remand of the senior journalist. Hence, Shahid Aslam would be kept in sub-jail of the CIA.
On January 14, the local court of Islamabad had approved two-day physical remand of Special Correspondent Bol News Shahid Aslam.
Bol News journalist Shahid Aslam, who was arrested on January 13 from Lahore, was produced before the court of Civil Judicial Magistrate Umar Shabbir.
During the hearing, lawyer of Shahid Aslam had said that the journalist was not involved in any kind of data leak. In response, FIA’s lawyer had said the FIA had evidence that the FBR data about former army chief Qamar Javed Bajwa had been leaked by him.
FIA’s lawyer had requested for physical remand for the recovery of laptops and other technical equipment, to which Aslam Shahid’s lawyer had said that the Islamabad High Court had set SOPs for arresting a journalist. The Lawyer said it has been necessary to take PFUJ into confidence.
The journalist’s lawyer had said, “If the FIA has any evidence of data transfer, then they should present it in court. It is illegal to arrest on a dubious charge and ask for physical remand.”
The Bol News correspondent had said he was a responsible journalist and data was not given to anyone.
