Flights delayed and cancelled at Jinnah International Airport due to heavy rain in Karachi
KARACHI: Flight operations at Jinnah International Airport were badly affected on Monday as heavy rain lashed the city, causing several delays, diversions, and cancellations.
According to airport officials, a cargo flight from Vietnam and an international flight from Bahrain were unable to land in Karachi due to the downpour. A local flight, PK-305 from Lahore, was also diverted to Sukkur, while another flight from Karachi to Sukkur (PK-536) was cancelled. Additionally, flights bound for Jeddah and Islamabad experienced delays due to the weather.
The heavy showers also triggered severe traffic jams across Karachi, leaving commuters stuck for hours. Motorcycles broke down on flooded roads, and traffic flow on Shahrah-e-Faisal was severely disrupted, resulting in long queues of vehicles. Waterlogging in the Korangi Industrial Area slowed movement, while M.A. Jinnah Road and Gurumandir to Liaquatabad were among the worst-hit. Congestion was also reported in Saddar, Tariq Road, Mauripur Road, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Malir, Kala Pul, Qayyumabad, Brooks Chowrangi, Jail Chowrangi, Hassan Square, and University Road. Even the Lyari Expressway and roads near the National Stadium were choked.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah directed the traffic police to manage the situation more effectively. He also ordered immediate drainage of rainwater and stressed that all possible facilities should be provided to citizens during the disruptions.
