PM Shehbaz, CDF Asim Munir land in Switzerland to participate in US-Iran talks

PM is also travelling with high-level delegation during visit.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir landed in Burgenstock, Switzerland, to participate in talks aimed at advancing the implementation of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the United States and Iran.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, both leaders will attend discussions today, June 21, which are being held as a follow-up to the agreement previously signed by Tehran and Washington.

PM Shehbaz is also travelling with a high-level delegation during the visit.

In a later statement, the Foreign Office said senior delegations from Iran, Qatar, and the United States will also take part in the talks. It described the meeting as the first official engagement since the Islamabad MoU was signed on June 17.

The FO added that Pakistan will continue to support the understanding reached between Tehran and Washington, saying its role has been balanced, constructive, and based on principles throughout the crisis.

It said Islamabad’s efforts included hosting earlier rounds of US-Iran talks and maintaining diplomatic contacts that led to the MoU.

On the sidelines of the talks, PM Shehbaz is expected to meet separately with representatives from Iran, Qatar, Switzerland, and the US to reaffirm Pakistan’s support for dialogue and regional peace.

The Switzerland meeting comes shortly after the US and Iran electronically signed the Islamabad MoU aimed at ending the Middle East conflict.

US President Donald Trump announced the agreement, saying it included steps to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and lift the US blockade on Iranian ports.

Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed the deal on behalf of their countries, while PM Shehbaz later signed the Islamabad MoU as a mediator, officially finalizing the agreement.
