At least eleven players and one staff member of the Iranian football team ‘Esteghlal ‘ have tested positive for the novel coronavirus.
According to the details, “After tests, 12 people — a team doctor and players — were confirmed positive”
The media reported that the tests carried out on “61 players and technical staff” at the request of the Tehran club.
Esteghlal, twice Asian champions, are sixth in the Iranian league which resumed play on June 25 after a four-month break due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
Irna also reported that the president of Foolad Ahvaz, a club from the south-western city of Ahvaz, confirmed on Saturday that 16 club staff, including 11 players, had tested positive.
Iran the most severely affected country in the region and, after a phase of decline, the disease on the rise again since the beginning of May.
Coronavirus in Iran
Iran has witnessed a record high rate of deaths since the pandemic hit the country, as 200 infected patients fell prey to the dread virus in the past 24 hours, while the overall death tally hit to 11,931.
The Ministry of Health’s spokeswoman, Sima Sadat Lari, said “the number of new coronavirus cases made up 2,637, while the overall number of infections has amounted to 245,688.”
According to the ministry of health, 207,000 patients have recovered, while 1,846,793 Covid-19 tests conducted since the pandemic started.
On 11 April the Iranian government lifted many restrictions and precautionary measures that mainly taken to contain the spread of the dread virus.
After the restrictions lifted, people got back to work, shopping malls and restaurants allowed to re-open.
