Emma Raducanu had to pull out of the WTA tournament this week in Austin, Texas, due to tonsillitis.

After twisting her ankle in Auckland in January, the number one player in the United Kingdom has only played four matches this year.

The 20-year-old was scheduled to play her first match since losing in the second round of the Australian Open to Coco Gauff in the new tournament in Texas, but she withdrew before the draw overnight.

“I regret having to withdraw from the ATX Open. I currently have tonsillitis and will be unable to compete this week. Thank you to the tournament and the wonderful hospitality in Austin “Raducanu stated.

Before the Miami Open, the British player will stay in Austin and then travel to Indian Wells, California, according to Raducanu’s management.

The 20-year-old, who took home the 2021 US Open title, fell to 80th in the WTA rankings and failed to make the main draw at Indian Wells, but she was given a wild card entry into the WTA 1000 competition.

She is currently working with Raducanu’s fifth coach, Sebastien Sachs.

Sachs, who has worked with Victoria Azarenka and Julia Gorges in the past, assisted Belinda Bencic in winning the Olympic gold in Tokyo 2020.

The ATX Open is scheduled for February 27 through March 5. The competition, which will be the first WTA tournament held in the country during its 50th anniversary year, will also feature a 16-team doubles field.
