In a surprising turn of events, the International Cricket Council (ICC) Board has declared South Africa as the host nation for the upcoming 15th edition of the ICC Men’s U19 Cricket World Cup, set to take place in January 2024. The decision comes after the ICC suspended Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) for failing to manage its operations independently and violating its obligations as an ICC Member.

SLC’s suspension is a result of government interference, prompting the ICC to step in and oversee funding to ensure proper governance. While Sri Lanka can still participate in international cricket, both in bilateral matches and ICC events, the country has been replaced by South Africa as the host for the U19 Cricket World Cup.

This move follows the relocation of the Women’s U19 T20 World Cup earlier this year, which was also hosted by South Africa.

The upcoming tournament will see 16 teams fiercely competing for the coveted trophy, with a revised format introducing a new Super Six stage after the Group stage to determine the semi-finalists.

Defending champions India find themselves in Group A alongside Bangladesh, Ireland, and the USA, while Group B features England, South Africa, the West Indies, and Scotland. Group C comprises Australia, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, and Group D includes Afghanistan, Pakistan, New Zealand, and Nepal.

The tournament, scheduled to commence in January, will consist of 41 matches, culminating in the final to be held in February. The last U19 Cricket World Cup took place in the West Indies in 2022, where India secured the title for the fifth time.
