Djokovic, Sabalenka recognized as 2023 ‘world champions’ by ITF
Based on their accomplishments at this year’s Grand Slams, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) recognized Novak Djokovic and Aryna Sabalenka as its ‘world champions’ of 2023.
After winning three of the four majors, Djokovic was awarded the men’s singles title for a record-breaking eighth time, according to a news release from the worldwide governing body of tennis.
The 36-year-old Serbian increased his record of major singles titles to 24, matching Margaret Court, and won the ATP Finals for a record-tying seventh time, capping the year at the top of the rankings.
Sabalenka advanced to the semifinals of both the French Open and Wimbledon, won her first major at the Australian Open, and placed second at the U.S. Open.
The Belarusian, who lost to Iga Swiatek for the year-end #1 ranking at the WTA Finals, described 2023 as “amazing” and expressed her happiness at being crowned world champion.
She stated in the ITF release, “I can’t wait to get back out on court for the new season in January.”
After winning their third straight U.S. Open championship, Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury won the men’s doubles title, while Storm Hunter and Elise Mertens, the runners-up at Wimbledon, won the women’s doubles championship.
