Medvedev unleashes grit to reach Australian Open final
Daniil Medvedev defeated Alexander Zverev. This will be his first Australian Open...
Daniil Medvedev made a stunning comeback after losing the first two sets to Alexander Zverev in the Australian Open 2024 semi-final. He won the match 5-7, 3-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(5), and 6-3 in a five-set battle that lasted for over four hours. This win has secured his place in the final against Jannik Sinner.
Medvedev’s victory has earned him a place in the elite list of Grand Slams (GS) alongside Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. He has won 10 or more matches against top-10 players at majors since 2017, making him the only player to achieve this feat besides Djokovic and Nadal.
This will be Medvedev’s sixth GS final, all of which have been on hard courts, three at the US and AUS Open each. Since the US Open 2019, he has become the male player with the most GS finals on the surface.
In the 2021 and 2022 Australian Open finals, Medvedev lost to Djokovic and Nadal respectively. This will be the first GS final where he will not be facing either of them.
Medvedev played his third five-setter at the ongoing slam, and now he faces Sinner in the final. Sinner dominated Djokovic in the first semi-final. This will be the 10th time that Sinner and Medvedev will meet each other, with the Russian leading head-to-head 6-3. However, the Italian star won their last three meetings.
Sinner, currently ranked world number four, became the first player to beat Djokovic at Melbourne Park in six years and has only lost one set throughout the entire campaign.
