Italy’s World Cup dreams have been shattered in a seismic shock as Bosnia and Herzegovina triumphed 4-1 on penalties on Tuesday, denying the Azzurri a third consecutive tournament appearance.
The historic defeat at Zenica’s Bilino Polje Stadium leaves four-time world champions grappling with a new nightmare.
Esmir Bajraktarevic’s decisive penalty sealed Bosnia’s victory catapulting them into Group B alongside co-hosts Canada, Switzerland, and Qatar, while plunging Italy into unprecedented despair.
The Azzurri had shown early promise, with Moise Kean opening the scoring in the 15th minute following a rare miscue by Bosnia’s goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj. but the game quickly spiraled into chaos for Italy.
Disaster struck just before halftime when Alessandro Bastoni received a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Amar Memic, leaving Italy reduced to ten men. Bosnia capitalized on the numerical advantage, with Haris Tabakovic equalizing in the 79th minute, pushing the match into extra time.
The penalty shoot-out became a torment for Italy. Pio Esposito’s first kick sailed over the bar, Bryan Cristante struck the post, and Bajraktarevic calmly converted the winner under Gianluigi Donnarumma’s desperate dive, extinguishing Italy’s World Cup hopes in cruel fashion.
“I don’t think the boys deserved such a blow, for the effort, the heart, and performance they displayed tonight… I’m proud of them. It’s incredibly hard to digest,” said a visibly shaken Gennaro Gattuso, Italy’s coach.
Italian Football Federation president Gabriele Gravina confirmed he had asked Gattuso to stay on as coach, asserting he would not resign despite the shocking elimination.
Italy now becomes the first World Cup-winning nation to miss three consecutive editions, adding to prior play-off heartbreaks against Sweden in 2018 and North Macedonia in 2022 a staggering fall for a football powerhouse.
Meanwhile, Bosnia celebrates a historic return to the World Cup finals their first since 2014. Coach Sergej Barbarez praised his team’s courage and resilience “These are players with character. We are proud of them. I’ve told them we must fight for every tournament opportunity.”
Italy’s campaign began with nervous exchanges, but Kean’s early strike offered fleeting hope. Bosnia’s response was relentless, testing Italy repeatedly. Ermedin Demirovic’s near-header in the 38th minute and Bastoni’s red card amplified Italy’s vulnerability. Gattuso reorganized his side defensively, but the relentless Bosnian pressure only grew.
Donnarumma delivered crucial saves keeping Italy alive, yet Kean squandered a golden opportunity in the 60th minute, sending a chance over the bar after intercepting a sloppy Bosnian pass.
Extra time was fraught with tension, Italy visibly frustrated over missed fouls, yet Bosnia maintained dominance, ultimately triumphing in the penalty drama.
The final whistle confirmed Italy’s ignominious exit, while Bosnia erupted in euphoric celebration, marking a historic triumph and sealing their place on the global stage.
