MONACO: Kenya’s rising middle-distance star Emmanuel Wanyonyi produced a stunning performance at the Monaco Diamond League, breaking the 26-year-old men’s 1,000-meter world record in his debut over the distance.

The 21-year-old clocked 2 minutes 11.83 seconds, eclipsing the previous world record of 2:11.96 set by fellow Kenyan Noah Ngeny in 1999 by 0.13 seconds. The performance also marked Wanyonyi’s personal best in the event.

Britain’s Jake Wightman finished second in 2:12.77, while Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati claimed third place.

Speaking after his record-breaking run, Wanyonyi said his immediate focus is not on the 800-meter world record but on continuing to improve his overall performances.
