Crypto scammers hacked OpenAI’s official X account

In a worrying development for the artificial intelligence community, OpenAI’s official news account on the social media platform X was hacked on Monday evening and used to promote a cryptocurrency scam.

The account, @OpenAINewsroom, which has around 54,000 followers and is typically used for company updates, was compromised and began promoting a fraudulent token called “$OPENAI.”

The now-deleted post falsely claimed that the token would “bridge the gap between AI and blockchain technology” and that OpenAI users could claim a share of the initial token supply. It also promised that holding the token would grant access to future beta programs.

To appear legitimate, the post linked to a website designed to look like OpenAI’s official page. However, the URL was not the authentic openai.com.

Clicking the link led users to a fake version of OpenAI’s homepage, where they were prompted to connect their crypto wallets. Users are strongly advised against linking their wallets to such fraudulent websites.

So far, neither OpenAI nor X has publicly commented on the security breach, and the compromised account has yet to issue any statement. The @OpenAINewsroom account is relatively new, having launched earlier this month, adding to concerns about its security vulnerabilities.
