T-Mobile has restored service after a temporary outage affected customers across several parts of the United States, causing many phones to lose network access and display SOS mode, the company confirmed the issue had been resolved and apologized for the disruption.
“T-Mobile has fully restored service for all customers and sincerely apologizes for the difficulties,” the company said in a statement. It added that it understands customers rely on its network to stay connected and thanked them for their patience while engineers worked to fix the problem.
Thousands of customers said they could not make calls, send messages or use mobile data. Many devices automatically switched to SOS mode, which allows emergency calls but blocks normal cellular service.
T-Mobile said its technical teams immediately investigated the problem and made restoring service their highest priority, the company did not explain what caused the outage.
Online outage tracker Downdetector showed a sharp rise in customer complaints before reports gradually declined as service returned. Reports came from multiple states, including California, Ohio, Florida, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Washington.

The outage happened on the same day that Microsoft worked to recover from an Xbox service interruption, adding to a series of technology related service issues affecting consumers.
The incident has also drawn comparisons to a major Verizon outage earlier this year. During that disruption, many Verizon subscribers also saw their phones switch to SOS mode after losing network access. Verizon later provided eligible customers with service credits following the outage.
Telecommunications experts say temporary network outages can happen because of software failures, equipment problems or unexpected technical issues. Most providers respond by deploying engineers to identify the problem and restore service as quickly as possible.
