GPT-4, an improved updated version of GPT-3, was recently launched by OpenAI.
OpenAI describes in the announcement how it has significantly outperformed GPT-3. For instance, GPT-4 passed the bar exam with a score in the 90th percentile as opposed to GPT-3, who passed with a score in the 10th percentile.
The GPT-4 base model, like previous GPT models, was trained to predict the next word in a document using publicly available data (such as internet data) as well as data we’ve licenced. The data is a web-scale corpus of data that includes correct and incorrect math problem solutions, weak and strong reasoning, self-contradictory and consistent statements, and a wide range of ideologies and ideas.

GPT-4 was truly a team effort from our entire company, but the overall leadership and technical vision of Jakub Pachocki for the pretraining effort was remarkable and we wouldn’t be here without it

Greg Brockman, President and Co-Founder of OpenAI for a developer demo showcasing GPT-4 and some of its capabilities/limitations.
We’re releasing GPT-4 — a large multimodal model (image & text in, text out) which is a significant advance in both capability and alignment.
Still limited in many ways, but passes many qualification benchmarks like the bar exam & AP Calculus: https://t.co/L6VGJ0WfFv
