President Vladimir Putin instructed Russia’s defense industry chiefs to step up so the army can fight in Ukraine swiftly.

Putin made the statements during a visit to Tula, a location for armaments manufacturing. He has characterized Russia’s intervention in Ukraine as a historic struggle to push back against what he calls excessive Western dominance.

“The most important key task of our military-industrial complex is to provide our units and frontline forces with everything they need: weapons, equipment, ammunition, and gear in the necessary quantities and of the right quality in the shortest possible timeframes,” said Putin.

“It’s also important to perfect and significantly improve the technical characteristics of weapons and equipment for our fighters based on the combat experience we have gained.”

Putin said the Russian army must learn from and repair its mistakes in Ukraine and promised to give it whatever it needs to pursue a 10-month-old conflict.

Since Putin’s “special military operation” on Feb. 24 sent tens of thousands of Russian troops into Ukraine, Moscow has surrendered half the land it initially took.

According to U.S. sources, it has lost or abandoned major military assets and suffered tens of thousands of deaths.
